Some questions I have asked myself over the past 12 hours:
1. Where’s the delete button?
2. Where’s the back-space?
3. How do you turn this thing off?
LOL, I am kidding of course.
A few days ago I posted on one of my many other blogs that I have a new obsession; manual typewriters - vintage manual typewriters but I reckon all MANUAL typewriters ARE vintage in this day and age.
Check out this website that specializes in old typewriters - mytypewriter.com
When one of Alabama Improper’s regular readers, and regular commenters, a one Mr. Infamous Don S., read that post he immediately offered to give one as a wedding gift to The Gent and me. He had one stored up in one of his closets, in his home, and it wasn’t being used.
Now, if you know anything about vintage typewriters you will understand that Mr. Don just offered to give us a wedding gift equivalent to all three of my OTHER marriages, plus this one coming up. Um, yeah, and the typewriter Mr. Don gave me is in EXCELLENT shape.
So, yesterday I was in Montgomery for a writers workshop. After the workshop, I drove 20 minutes off my schedule to stop by and see Mr. Don, meet him, and pick up the wedding gift - this treasure of memories, and yes I am that old to remember manual typewriters - maybe not THIS one but I do remember manual typewriters. In fact, I learned to type on a manual typewriter, in high school, and get this - I was such a geek that I went to a TYPING CONTEST, for the state, and came in fourth place.
But I digress….
What I wanted to blog about was the pleasure of finally meeting Mr. Don. After reading his comments for a while now, learning about his family via communicating on the internet, and receiving mass emails from him, it was truly cool to get to meet him face to face. He is much taller than I had expected and even handsomer in person. He’s a gentle, kind, generous, and thoughtful soul. He also gave us a plant that is supposed to grow a 50-lb head of cabbage! I can’t wait for that to happen. Pictures will be taken.
Anyway, back to the old Smith-Corona. I got it out last night and played with it, it types great. I already ordered some new ribbons for it too.
Oh, and the smell! I LOVE the smell. I wish I could describe the smell, and how it makes me feel. Sadly, I can not. Maybe it is a writing exercise I will try out on the ole Smith-Corona Portable someday soon. My first task, however, is to type out a THANK YOU letter to Mr. Don. I felt really bad just pulling in his drive way, jumping out and taking his stuff, and then getting right back out on the road. I didn’t even have time to have a glass of sweet tea with the gentleman. Shame on me, but we did agree that if ever I was down in that area again that we would MAKE time to sit and visit for a little while.
If you’d like to see pictures of the Smith-Corona Portable, pictures I took this morning, then go to My Flickr Account.

Oh, and I almost forgot, I have a wedding to blog about too. I went to a co-workers wedding last weekend and took some pictures and wanted to post them too. Maybe later I can get around to doing it. Steven Siegel was there. heh.
And enjoy these two pictures I took of my trip yesterday. Of course I forgot to take pictures of the actual workshop and of the actual people who attended. I didn’t realize this until I was on my way home yesterday evening so I decided to work with that I had at the time, making the best of it. And not one word about my lapsing memory either.

{UPDATE} Kids have just discovered the typewriter and are having a ball typing on it. LOL It was fun to watch their reactions as I showed them how it worked, and more importantly, what it was in the first place! And they really don’t know what to think of the carbon copy paper.
